Ever find yourself wondering if childhood crushes should come with a warning label? “Stacy’s Mom,” that unforgettable Fountains of Wayne jam, is apparently the soundtrack to every awkward pre-teen’s secret fantasies — you know, the kind that would make Neptune’s mystical waves blush. Sure, it’s an earworm with a zap of catchy energy, but peel back the layers and the lyrics hint at some eyebrow-raising undertones, the kind that modern-day astrologers might caution us about when Venus stirs up those forbidden desires. And hey, while folks are busy unpacking the “problematic” vibes of old tunes like “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Stacy’s Mom” gets a fresh comedic roast from Will King. He flips the script — imagining “Stacy’s Dad” in the spotlight, which honestly throws a wild curveball on how we view these cheeky, nostalgic nuggets. Meanwhile, Rachel Hunter, the sultry star of the original video, keeps shining two decades later on talent shows and reality TV — proof that some cosmic energies just keep glowing. So, next time you catch that chorus stuck on repeat, ask yourself: Is it nostalgia, astrology, or just pure, unfiltered weirdness? LEARN MORE
“Stacy’s mom has got it going on, she’s all I want and I’ve waited for so long,” so goes the famous Fountains of Wayne song from the perspective of a child lusting over his friend’s mother.
It might be one hell of a catchy tune, but perhaps it’s best not to dig too far down into the lyrics as they go from the kid fancying this woman to thinking ‘since your dad walked out your mom could use a guy like me’.
People seem to like poking holes in potentially problematic former songs, as the annual furore over ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ is sure to start up again in a month or two, while there’s plenty more tunes which have been called out.
In the case of ‘Stacy’s Mom’ it was done by a chap called Will King, who even released his own tune called ‘Something’s Wrong With Stacy’s Mom’.
Containing lyrics which alluded to To Catch A Predator like ‘When she knew that kid was gonna mow her grass, Stacy’s mom is like the people Chris Hansen would catch’, he points out some of the weirdness in the tune.
The song does make it clear that it’s just the kid fantasising, but Will King wonders ‘why did she come out with just a towel on’ and says it ‘hits a little different now that I’m 33’.
He also pointed out that the song would come across differently if you flipped things around and it was ‘Stacy’s Dad’, while he sang that ‘Stacy’s mom should put some clothes on’.
Of course, it’s a comedy song and he’s largely poking fun at the tune and the music video to it, which starred New Zealand model Rachel Hunter as Stacy’s mom.
Over 20 years later, she’s been a judge on New Zealand’s Got Talent and RuPaul’s Drag Race, and also made an appearance on Dancing With The Stars.

All in all, it sounds like it’s been going pretty well for Stacy’s mom.
“It’s sort of about that period when you’re first hitting puberty and suddenly everybody of the opposite sex is strangely attractive,” Fountains of Wayne guitarist Adam Schlesinger said about the inspiration behind the song.
“It’s a combination of sexual awakening and limited contact with a large number of people. It’s the kids at school and whoever else happens to be in your life.”
He said that when he was aged 11 or 12, one of his best friends came to him and told him, ‘he thought my grandmother was hot’.
The guitarist said that the music video turned out to be ‘fairly literal and yet very over-the-top’.
