Could this be his most iconic era yet, or just another planetary blip on his ever-evolving musical chart? Let’s dive in—after all, in Bieber’s universe, timing is always relative . LEARN MORE
Well, it wasn’t quite the midnight drop that was promised, but Justin Bieber did eventually release his new double album Swag II early Friday morning.
Swag II, the swift follow-up to Bieber’s seventh album that dropped nearly two months ago, officially hit Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and other services, despite fans thinking something was up when it didn’t drop midnight eastern, and then midnight pacific time.
Bieber himself was aware of the anxiety over the delays and posted a couple messages on his Instagram that there seemed to be a technical delay of some sort. “It’s comingggggg” Bieber captioned an image of a text conversation with his manager David Waltzer.
Early Thursday, Bieber began teasing the project, confirming his second surprise release after he dropped Swag in July with little to no warning. He shared posts on Instagram ahead of the record’s drop at midnight Friday, revealing the project’s pink artwork and varying promotional posters with the similar rosy hue.
Swag II is a double album, featuring a whopping 44 songs in total. The record features guest appearances from the likes of Tems, Bakar, Lil B, Hurricane Chris, Eddie Benjamin, Gunna, Sexxy Red, Dijon and comedian Druski.
This is notably the first year Bieber has dropped two albums. Before Swag’s July arrival, his most recent release was 2021’s Justice.
The Swag era comes following years of significant changes in Bieber’s life. Since releasing Justice, he’d suffered health issues, canceled a tour, sold his catalog in a $200 million deal, split from longtime manager Scooter Braun and had a child with his wife, Hailey Bieber.
Swag debuted with 163,000 units on over 198 million streams for Bieber’s strongest streaming debut of his career. Will Swag II open with similar figures? Stay tuned.
