Curious how this whole “genetic” mess evolved from a denim commercial to a cultural debate? Buckle up—it’s a wild ride. LEARN MORE.
Lizzo has joined the thousands of people reacting to the controversial American Eagle ad featuring actress Sydney Sweeney.
However, unlike most online who have expressed outrage at the jeans campaign due to its use of the word “genetics,” Lizzo took a more playful route by sharing a meme of herself in the ad.
Meanwhile, Sydney Sweeney has yet to react to the ongoing backlash she has been getting, while American Eagle continues to enjoy significant success thanks to the controversial campaign.

Lizzo certainly knows how to take a joke and is always down to poke fun at herself before her haters can.
Amid the growing wave of criticism over the viral Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad, which features the actress dressed in denim and talking about her “genes/jenes,” Lizzo has joined in by sharing a meme of herself in a similar pose as Sweeney.
Taking to her Instagram page, the singer posted what appeared to be an AI-generated image of her in the American Eagle ad, with the text, “if the Democrats won the election.”
Adding to the joke, Lizzo captioned the post, “My genes are black…” seemingly referencing Sweeney’s controversial line that was a play on words with “genes” and “jeans.”

In the ad, Sweeney said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color… My ‘jeans’ are blue.”

After Lizzo shared the meme that was seemingly created to make a jest of her, she got flooded by several positive comments praising her for not allowing the image to get to her.
One person said, “I’m glad you’re the one who posted this because I might have been fighting in the comments lol.”
Another wrote, “Good genes and she can cook. Ain’t nobody want no Sydney Sweeney. We want lizzo.”
A third individual noted, “You look great…But I am honestly perplexed by the reaction to this ad. It’s not even an original premise. Obviously, it was in reference to the fact that she’s got a great body. Whatev!”
Another person commented, “Interesting enough, if it were Lizzo, i would have felt more included, even if i am not Black.”

After the Sweeney American Eagle jeans ad went viral, the actress came under heavy backlash for a variety of reasons.
Some individuals online were angry that the ad, which reportedly aims to help raise money to support domestic violence survivors, sexualized Sweeney by highlighting her body.
The ad was labeled “tone deaf” with people claiming it was “all about her boobs” and was disrespectful to the cause it was trying to support.
Things, however, only worsened as more people began to accuse the company and Sweeney of promoting white supremacy, claiming that the use of “genes” and “genetics” in the ad aligned with Nazi propaganda.
Sweeney’s collaboration with American Eagle, branded “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” features a denim line designed by the actress herself.

According to reports, 100% of the purchase price of The Sydney Jean will go directly to Crisis Text Line, a charity that offers mental health support to domestic abuse victims.
Lizzo isn’t the only notable person to poke fun at Sweeney’s new ad, as rapper Doja Cat took a jab at the actress’s campaign in a video shared online.
Unlike Lizzo, Doja’s approach seemed to mock Sweeney as she put on a very thick southern accent while reciting the words said by the “Euphoria” star.
She also captioned her TikTok video, “My jeans are blee.”
Doja has since come under heavy criticism for her video, with many accusing her of being “jealous” of Sweeney.
One person responded to her video, writing: “But if a white person were to make fun a black person’s ad and used a generic black voice they would be considered racist? Ok, got it.”
Another said, “Honestly, America is such a hateful place. Jealous people. It’s just an ad, and Sydney looks great.”

One more person slammed Doja, stating, “Tell me you’re jealous without saying you’re jealous.”
Since the outrage over the American Eagle ad began, neither Sweeney nor the company has addressed the situation, seemingly opting to ignore the criticism until the problem subsides.
However, American Eagle’s stock has enjoyed a significant surge, hitting $11, after trading between $9 and the mid-$10 range for most of the summer.
The Chief Marketing Officer of the company, Craig Brommers, has also hinted at the success of the ad in a recent interview with Marketing Dive.
“To be able to partner with [Sweeney] on this is saying something, and it’s saying something in what has been a trickier retail environment this year, that American Eagle is still placing big bets,” Brommers stated.

“We are still the jeans authority, especially for Gen Z,” He continued. “What we’ve also learned along the way is as talent costs have escalated, sometimes it’s actually more important to place the big bets behind the biggest stars, and while those investments tend to be higher, the payback tends to be higher as well.”
