Chapter 38 – Kings, Family Ties & The Bitter Pill
I told my sister about Shack’s brother’s visit.
“That little brother is something else. I can’t believe I called him a wallflower. Now we know who the real, brother’s keeper is.”
“True, at least in this era. I think, Shack, has looked out for him. Like he’d be picked on in school. Shack, would take care of it.”
“Little brother was a braniac, no doubt. They do get picked on. You would have taken shit in high school, too, if not for, Layne and I. Layne was popular. He loved you and everybody knew it. He’d have put the kibosh on anyone who messed with you. You also had me for big sister. I was popular too, plus I could put the fear of God, in anyone, anytime I needed to. So here again, Shack and I line up. So you marry your sister and he marries his little brother. Do you agree?”
“I do. What you’re saying is undeniable.”
“So why would this happen?” she asked. “In your case, it’s protection. Do you agree with that?”
“Yes. Come to think of it, he’s a hybrid of you and Layne. You had all the friends and sports teams. Layne had that too, but he was a Leo. He was flashy as hell and always making grand show of his love,” I said.
“He painted your name all over his van. I was mortified. I liked, Layne, but, Jesus H. Christ,” she said, sounding like she did in high school. “He painted your name on both sides! In giant letters!”
“Yeah, but you know what else he did? He used to take me out to these nice restaurants. Places, I would be nowhere near, without him. I was thirteen, and we’d go in and order drinks with dinner.”
“Really?”
“Yes. We eat dinner and drink, Pina Coladas. They served us! To this day, I have no idea why.”
“You guys were cute, that’s why. I’m sure they knew you were underage.”
“Yes, they’d of had to. We were thirteen and sixteen! He ordered us drinks; I couldn’t believe it when they set a big honkin’ pina colada in front of us. Pina Colada for Lovers, with two straws,” I said, gleefully.
“Elsa, I’m going to vomit.”
“Yeah, Leo isn’t your thing. But this is just like, Shack. He always has me meet him, somewhere. He gets there first and waits. I come in, making an entrance.”
“XXXXX! I need a barf bag!”
“I know, but I like it,” I said, smiling, broadly.
“Yep! You’ve been starring in one love movie or the other, all your life, since you were a little child. And I’ve had to watch these films… and gag on them,” she said.
I laughed, heartily. “Yeah, someone calls, “Action!” I’m there!”
We laughed and laughed.
“Okay, so that’s your end; let’s look at his. Easy. You and little brother are fun, you’re funny, and you’re loyal. And oh my God, how could I miss this? Little brother is Shack’s auxiliary brain! He uses his brother for his external brain. I do the same thing with you! I’m sorry, I use you like this, but it’s hard not to do.”
“Why?”
“Well, we’re the older sibling and we have our snot little brother or sister there. They’re cute or whatever. We don’t take the underlings, seriously. But then you start gaining on us,” she said. I laughed.
“As time passes, you keep gaining; it’s hits us! We’re going to be surpassed! That is a sad day. You just don’t want your little sibling to get out in front. He’s feels this way too, doesn’t he?”
“Definitely. He chokes it down on a daily basis,” I said, laughing.
“So do I, Elsa. So do I! It’s not that either of you are trying to compete with us. Your brains sit there and throb on their own,” she said, snorting. “We realize we have to do something. Stick a knife in your brain? Or use it to our advantage?” She smokes. “Shack and I chose the latter. I really don’t like that I have this much in common with this dude.”
“I bet.”
“But at least, I don’t think I’m a Queen. Shack thinks he is a King, because of that Leo.”
“He doesn’t think he’s a King.”
“There you go, defending him. You’re in love, for sure. But he does think he’s a King. Hello!? Tarzan, King of the Jungle!”
I was quiet.
“Elsa, he thinks he is a King and you agree. You never get with anyone who is not a King. Would you like me to tick off some of your other, Kings of yore?”
“Yes. Tick them off.”
“Layne! King of football. The infamous, Scott. Piano King! What about that Scorpio with the twenty-thousand dollar, pool cue? Billiards King! King of Pool! Should I go on? Your male friends a like this too. Ben! Cello king. Shack is King of Sport, or Music King!”
“Okay, well that’s eye-opening and embarrassing.”
“You don’t have to be embarrassed. I’m the one who has to be embarrassed, because I’m your sister. But you see what I’ve done. I’ve parlayed your embarrassing love movies and antics, into free luxury clothing. I’m sure, Shack, exploits his brother in a similar fashion. For example, he got you, by pretending to be his brother’s keeper!”
We roared.
“You say, oh, my King, and wipe your brow!”
I blushed and laughed, hard.
“Hey! The world needs entertainment and Leo provides it. And there is a deeper side to this. These men are Kings, because they have passion and they have dedication. They’ve busted their ass to become royalty, yes?”
“Yes.”
“Your eighth house responds to that, as does your Capricorn, and your Leo heart. You’ll only interested in someone who’s willing to fight for something. Not just fight. They must win the fight. The fight of their choosing.”
“It’s all true.”
“I know it’s true. And, Shack, has all these qualities and he has them in spades. He’s also a weirdo, which is another, necessary component. You don’t want any normal motherfuckers, boring you.”
“Also, true.”
“The last component; they need to have some kind of humor and it should be, original. Like, Shack, getting dressed up like, Back To The Future, to clean the chimney, for your entertainment.”
“Yep. I also like adventure.”
“Oh yeah! How could I forget! You stole a truck took off when you were ten. You need a thrill in your life, but really that’s about expanding. Doing something new. You’d not go skating at the local high school, without this guy, never mind your tour of horror, going East. You love this shit. It’s the Jupiter factor. Hey, Elsa! I’m going out our window tonight. Want to come? What do you say?”
“Fuckin’ A! When are we leaving!?”
“Exactly what a Sadge wants to hear. So this guy’s got you and according to his non-lying brother, you’ve got him, as well.” She stops to smoke. I can hear her exhale while she thinks. “That’s another thing you two fuckers have in common. You don’t lie, and that is rare. Just look how important the truth is to him. He doesn’t want any bs. You’re exactly like that.”
“Well, Elsa, that’s all I have. Call me when, Daddy or Bitch Minor or Bitch Major, makes a move.”
“Which is which?”
“I haven’t figured it out? You?”
“Haven’t thought about it. The dad is the one that concerns me.”
“Me too.”
I told her what I was wearing on my date and she approved.
Click.
Shack came home, stressed but in control. His color was okay. “Are you catching up at work?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Good. Are they still calling?”
He groaned. “They call me, constantly. I stopped answering the phone, but they keep calling. I answer it about every fifth time. It’s the same thing, over and over. They just want to talk to me.”
“About, what?”
“You. They want to talk about you. You’re the only topic they’re interested in ever since the first time I mentioned you.”
I knew this was bad.
“I regret telling them about you and also, taking you to meet them. I wish we’d have eloped in November and skipped Thanksgiving. I gave them way too much credit. Now I have to figure out how to shut them up. I’ve not been able to do it, even with my brother’s help. If anything, they’re calling more and more.”
“To talk about me?”
“Yes. They want to talk about, Elsa. They want to talk about my wife. I can’t get them to shut the fuck up. They never ask anything else.”
“And they’re calling your brother too?”
“Of course. He also tells them to shut the fuck up. I don’t know why they won’t leave us alone. They left us alone for ten years. My mother used to call me, once a year, if that. My father, maybe once every two or three years. Now they both call me, every. Single. Day.”
“I don’t want you to worry about this. We’ll get it taken care of. It’s just been a lot harder than either of us expected. Hard, meaning impossible. But we will find a way.”
“Let’s talk about our date, instead. I’m sick of these motherfuckers. I want to spend some time with my wife. I want to go have fun with my wife! Do you want to have some fun with me?”
We had a good, fun week and a great time on, Friday. But Shack’s family was stuck like a splinter, in both our minds. The splinter was breaking down and the poison was spreading.
This was clear to me, with my spider senses. I don’t think he grasped it in the same way
At this point, I wanted him to slay the dragon and be done with it, but it was his family, his call.
He said he was trying to resolve this without cutting them off. He also said it didn’t look like they were going to give him a choice.
It made him feel bad, they had no concern about him at all. They never once asked him how he was doing. Bitter pill, all the way around.
To be continued.
