Chapter 29 – Shack’s Brother, Speaks

Shack liked to run. If you happened to work downtown in Denver, in this era, you might have seen him. Once a week, he’d take a two hour lunch, strip down to his gym shorts and run in the streets. The streets, the sidewalks, construction zones, where ever.

“Like, does anyone ever say anything to you?” I asked.

“I’m pretty fast.”

“Like Tarzan?”

“Yes.”

He told me he wanted to start running on the track at the high school, near the house on the weekends. “I want you to come with me. I want us to go together.”

“I can’t run. I can’t keep up.”

“I know, so I got you something so you can. Are you interested?”

“Yes.”

He’d bought me gold roller blades, because I’d told him my skating story, from back in the day. The next thing I knew, we’re on the track and he’s challenged me to skate twenty-five miles. Twenty-five miles!

I was used to four wheels on skates. I barely knew how to roller blade, but I’d failed to touch the chimney and I wasn’t going to lose twice! I put on the skates and challenged him to catch my ass, then took off.

Unbelievably, I skated around the track 100 times, mocking him and making jokes every time I lapped him. Oh God, my legs were burning, but I sailed by, shouting as I passed, “You’re sloooow!”  I was also calling him a turtle, for my own amusement.

This is the weirdo stuff we were doing as dark clouds, I couldn’t see, formed around us.

We had a lot of friends stopping by. My friends liked, Shack, across the board, except for, Claude, who was withholding judgment. He did not think any shack man could possibly be good enough for me.  I was not surprised.  Claude thought he was my dad and he thought I’d been bamboozled.

Many of Shack’s friends warmed up to me. They were still largely, snobs, especially the women, but my friend, Sonia, was their peer. Sonia had a Scorpio moon and she was protective of me. She was going to come to the party and work on this issue.

We had our party, maybe a week after we moved in. We were essentially camping out in the house, but I had the pans I needed to cook. I still remember what I made. Red, white and green. Pasta and meatballs with red sauce, white veggie lasagna and pasta with pesto. Tons of garlic bread, salad and we had some good wine.

The party was a big hit. Everyone came and I mean, everyone. We looked at each other, like we pulled this off, too!

We saw that when we pooled our energy and applied it to a goal, things worked out. If we had a friend who didn’t think we were going to make it, or didn’t think we should be together, they changed their mind at this party. We became an inspiration, rather than a curiosity?

This is not to say it was all bliss. It was not. I wouldn’t say I landed hard, but I did land in the mountains and I’d not thought it through.

My friends lived in the city; the drive was significant. I also routinely went to the gym, which was now too far away to make it worthwhile. No more chats with, Claude! No more Kay fun or going out with, Sonia. Dee lived nearer to the mountains. She was a double Sagittarius who got around, so I was seeing at least one of my friends, regularly.

I would have been in a world of hurt, had the men not hopped a bunch of phones so we could be called and call the city without long distance charges. No cell phones at this time.

Speaking of the phone, it rang all the time. My friends, his friends and numerous individuals who had taken one of, Shack’s checks, rang that phone off the hook. I didn’t have a particular problem, but I did see there was a lot to do as far as settling in, went. I also felt pressure to figure out how to get money coming in.

This wasn’t because I particularly needed the money. I was set up in that regard. I’d saved my money since I was a teenager. I had plenty of room to operate, I’m just supposed to work!

I was going to try to work as an astrologer and see if I could do it. I had ideas and I had started marketing myself, before this all unfolded. But I thought I would be an astrologer “in person”. When I saw the hardship this move put on my friends and I, as far as getting together – well, I was going to have to figure something else out.

My sister told me to start writing and everything would work out.

“How?”

“I don’t know. Elsa, just shut the fuck up and write.”

“About what?”

“About astrology. About the things you think about. Elsa, if you will just write, it will come to you. Get some paper, get a pen, and WRITE! I don’t want to talk anymore, okay? I am not used to you being this stupid. You know how I hate you being smart? This is worse! I’m not trying to hurt your feelings. You’re supposed to write. Just WRITE! Put the pen on the paper and move it around.  Can you do that?”

Click.

Shack’s brother started to talk to me more. I don’t know why. But when he brought the form letters for the checks over, he told me, Shack, had said to leave them with his wife.

“I was happy when he said that, you have no idea. I want you as a sister, but I also want you to be his wife, because until you are, I am his wife!” I laughed, so he shared more.

“If there were ever a man who needed a wife, it’s my brother. I know my brother-in-law told you this family needed you. I didn’t agree with some of what he said, but I agreed with that. I don’t know about the people in East needing you so much, but Shack needs you, badly. He needs a wife. Get a wife! I have told him this for years. I couldn’t believe it when he said, give these to my wife. Finally! It’s about time!”

“I want to thank you for helping my brother; and for helping me. If you didn’t help him, I’d have to. He needs my help, a lot.”

“I’ve noticed.”

“Yeah. I know you’ve noticed. He does need my help, A LOT. And I’ve seen you step in to take some of that off me, like what you’re doing with these checks. You’re a very good woman and he does deserve you. I just want you to know how much I, personally appreciate you and what you done for us. Look at this situation. I’d have wound up doing this for him. But with you here, all I had to do was print sheets of paper with a paragraph on them. It look me less than five minutes and I get to dump them on you.”

“Yeah, thanks, ” I said, grinning.

“Elsa, I hope this continues. I hope you’ll continue to help him and I hope he quits asking me to do things for him all the time.”

“He calls you a lot.”

“No shit. That motherfucker calls me ten times a day. Five, now that he has a wife and I want it to reduce further. Can you understand, why?”

“Yes!”

“Good. I want him to need me less and call me less. I think this will happen once this situation in the East is settled. He’s working on it.”

“What’s the situation in the East?”

“Oh, it’s about your ring. They’re fighting about it. Shack wants it to be given to you, as it’s been promised to him, to give to his wife, his whole life. Our sister wants it for herself. She wants everything for herself. Well you know. You’ve met her. Anyway, Elsa, I would prefer my brother not call me so much. Actually, I would prefer he not call me at all.”

I was shocked.

“I’d rather you call me. YOU can call me for anything, anytime you want. But I want him to go to his wife first and give me a break. If he wants you to do anything you can’t handle, then you call me. Would this be okay with you?”

“Yes. It’s perfect.”

“I thought you’d say that”, he said, sounding exactly like, Shack.

“Okay then. I’m glad to hear it. I’m going to tell my brother, from now on he should come to you for the help he needs and leave me the fuck alone. I’ve done enough for him. He shouldn’t ask or expect me to do his shit all the time. You can do everything I can, except maybe lift something. If you need something lifted, call me and I’ll be there.”

“That’s perfect. Thank you.”

“Believe me, if I pick up my phone and it’s you calling, not him; well that’s the day I’m waiting for. And, Elsa, there is another thing I can do, you can’t. I can use a computer. I have told, Shack, he should buy you one. He should quit fucking around and buy you a fucking computer. You need to get on the internet; the sooner the better. Or you can buy one yourself. You have the money?”

computer

“Yes.”

“Well you need to get on there. It doesn’t matter who buys it. They’re expensive, but it’s an investment that will pay off.  You can make a lot of money on the internet. My brother isn’t interested, that’s fine. But it would be perfect for you. You will do great on the internet, just like I have.”

“You make money on the internet?”

“I have made a lot of money on the internet; enough I was able to quit my job. I now work on the internet, full time, and I am making A LOT of money. A LOT. It’s stupid, how much money I’ve made, but does he listen to me? No! I know it’s intimidating but I can help you. It’s not that hard. I’m telling you, if you want to be an astrologer – and you are going to be great at it -then you want to be one on the internet.”

“An internet astrologer?”

“Yes. It is definitely where all business is going.  Getting there early will give a big advantage.”

I was listening.

“I know you’re going to do what you say you want to do. Others may doubt you, but I do not. I know you want to help people, I know you are going to help a lot of them and I know you can do it and you will do it.”

“How do you know?”

“Because of the way you’ve helped me. You have no idea what you’ve done for me. I’ve also heard you to talking to your friend, is it, Sonia?”

“Yes?”

“I have heard you on the phone. I’m sorry. I know I should not be eavesdropping, but I have heard you talk to her.  I’ve heard you helping her and using astrology to do it. I know how good you are at this. You are great and you can succeed on the internet. I know, Sonia, is a having a bad time. I’m sorry about that, but you’ve helped her, tremendously.  Listen. I’ve got to go. You think about the computer. One way or the other we’ve got to get you set up. You do not want to be writing with a pen and paper with computers on the horizon. Trust me on this.”

“I do trust you.”

“Good. I trust you too. It’s the perfect solution. Now here’s your work, that you will do on my brother’s behalf, because you love him,” he said, dropping a stack of form letters on the kitchen table. Elsa, I never thought this day would come. That I would ever get relief from my brother. THANK YOU.”

Well that was unexpected.

To be continued.
